National Security Leaders for America Supports Upholding the Work of the Base Naming Commission
October 7, 2025
Washington, DC, October 7, 2025 — National Security Leaders for America (NSL4A) strongly supports the House-passed Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that preserves the bipartisan Naming Commission’s work established by Congress in the FY2021 NDAA. NSL4A joins the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and other organizations in this effort to uphold integrity, unity, and accountability within our armed forces.
Created in 2021, the Naming Commission worked across party lines to ensure our military symbols reflect American ideals of unity and service. Reversing its results would disrespect both the process and the principles it represents.
Spearheaded by Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (WA-10), Section 2866 of HR. 3838 protects the progress made in renaming Department of Defense installations and assets that once honored Confederate officers who fought against the United States. Maintaining these changes is vital to preserving historical accuracy, national unity, and the moral and constitutional values that define our military.
Efforts to undo this work undermine congressional authority, erode public trust, and send the wrong message about America’s commitment to democracy and equality under the law. As an organization dedicated to safeguarding democratic norms, constitutional freedoms, and the military’s nonpartisan integrity, NSL4A stands firmly against such reversals.
“Our nation’s military bases should celebrate those who strengthened our Union, not those who tried to tear it apart,” said NSL4A Member Larry Romo, former Director of the Selective Service System and member of the Base Renaming Commission, adding, “These names represent who we choose to honor as Americans—and the men and women who wear the uniform deserve better than to serve on installations named for those who fought against the United States.”
NSL4A calls on members of Congress to defend the Naming Commission’s work and reject any attempt to politicize our armed forces or distort the history they represent. America’s strength lies in its unity—and our military must always reflect the highest ideals of the Constitution it serves to protect.
