National Security Leaders for America Calls for Bipartisan Investigation of Use of Signal App
April 2, 2025
Washington, DC, April 2, 2025, National Security Leaders for America (NSL4A) Founder and President, retired Rear Admiral Mike Smith, issued the following statement on today's Politico report revealing the widespread and improper use of the commercial encrypted messaging app Signal and called for a bipartisan investigation into what critical information may have fallen into adversaries’ hands:
“The new revelations reported by Politico—that the National Security Advisor’s staff created and maintained at least 20 Signal group chats for managing sensitive international crises—raise the concerning possibility that our nation’s adversaries may have had line of sight into critical strategies, tactics, and objectives. Understanding exactly what information is compromised should concern all patriots, as it concerns the many National Security Leaders for America members who proudly served their country.
Accordingly, we are calling for a bipartisan investigation into which conversations adversaries could have had access to, what impact the loss of those secrets will have upon warfighter safety and American national security, what protocols were breached, and how we can prevent such operational security failures in the future. We vigorously commend Senators Roger Wicker and Jack Reed for their bipartisan leadership in requesting an inspector general investigation into the initial incident; given the possibility that the use of the Signal app was a regular occurrence, however, we now call for a more extensive investigation into the full scope of this failure.
Like many National Security Leaders for America members who have held command responsibility, we believe investigations are not partisan exercises but essential steps to protect our troops and national security—objectives all Americans should support.”
