Trump’s proposal would increase prices for every segment of the American economy. In effect, this would be a tax increase on every American without lowering the deficit. As the center-right American Action Forum found, such a tariff would “distort global trade, discourage economic activity, and have broad negative consequences for the U.S. economy.”
